Around
In the 3rd arrondissement, near the Saint-Charles train station, the Belle de Mai was for a long time the headquarters of the Marseille tobacco factory. Its proximity to the Joliette and the Saint-Charles train station gives it a central position.
The district is home to the famous "Friche Belle de Mai": a disused factory, which became an industrial wasteland, was renovated and transformed into a cultural and heritage site in the 1990s. It is now home to the Municipal Archives of Marseille, a Media Centre and the Friche, a major cultural space. As for its name, it seems to evoke a "vinea bela de mai", meaning a late vine that is "beautiful from the start". A very pretty name for this historic "red" district, now much more colourful, whose future is taking shape between real estate development and a village core with a thousand and one places animated by local life.
The district is also home to the popular restaurant "Les grandes tables de la Friche", which combines industrial-style architecture with a diversified cuisine offering healthy and affordable seasonal menus for lunch and dinner, as well as a large terrace/bar in summer. Also unmissable in summer are the events, aperitifs, parties and open-air concerts on the famous "TOIT-Terrasse de la Friche.
Just 350 m from the flat, you can also reach the Levat Convent, which houses artists' workspaces via the Juxtapoz workshop, with free access to the Levat Gardens and its vegetable gardens, where you can also have a drink under the cool trees in summer, and learn about the ecological approaches proposed to the residents and inhabitants of the district...
All local shops can be found within a 300m walk: supermarket, pharmacies, post office, banks, bakery, etc., notably on the Place Cadenat, which also hosts a daily market from Monday to Saturday morning and a flower market on Thursday morning.
Places of interest: the train station and the Friche de la Belle de Mai, art cinema, Le Gyptis, 300m away
