Around

High above the Old Port, Le Pharo is located between the Plage des Catalans and Fort Saint-Nicolas. The Palais, from which it takes its name, is a unique place offering a panoramic view of Marseille harbour, the Old Port, Fort Saint-Jean and the Mucem.
Here you can admire the boats and enjoy a sunset on the big screen.

Napoleon III commissioned the architects Vaucher and Lefuel to build the Palais for Empress Eugénie in 1858. The palace was later converted into a medical school, and today houses various municipal services and an underground conference centre.

There are several emblematic establishments to discover in this pretty district. Like the Catalans baths, which owe their name to a community of Spanish fishermen who have lived here since the 17th century. Its wooden promenades and cabins on stilts, which have now disappeared, have given way to a swimming circle. The Les Catalans building, with its pleated white facades designed by the architects Bentz and Devin. The Pharo residence, this dominant tower forms the counterpart to the Tourette residence at the entrance to the port. The Saint-Georges building, with its "banana" shape designed by the architect Ingrand in 1963, has been designated a 20th-century heritage site. The Lycée Colbert, designed by the renowned architects Egger and Pouillon, has also been designated a 20th-century heritage site. Its courtyard features a secret ceramic fresco.
