Just a stone’s throw away is Place de la Nation, a vast roundabout; the streets surrounding the square are brimming with hidden gems waiting to be discovered: from a quirky coffee roastery to a haunt for trade unionists who dance flamenco, expect to be surprised.
Place de la Nation features a monument on its central island. Erected here in 1899, ‘The Triumph of the Republic’ is a bronze sculpture by Jules Dalou depicting the Republic hoisted onto a chariot drawn by lions, spurred on by Liberty and Labour. To the east of the square stand two columns, at the foot of which are two former customs houses that formed part of the Farmers-General’s Wall. This complex is the work of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and dates from 1787. At that time, the square was known as the Place du Trône. This name dated back to 1660. On 26 July of that year, a ceremonial throne was set up here to welcome Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse of Austria, who had just been married in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
